DENVER — In this video exclusive, Megan R. Haymart, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, discusses assumptions, approaches and misconceptions about imaging surveillance after initial treatment for thyroid cancer.
According to Haymart, common assumptions made are that all thyroid specialists are imaging patients similarly after initial treatment and that imaging is optimal for the patients. Surveys, large population-based data sets and institutional data sets can all be used to evaluate these common assumptions, she said.
“Our assumption that we all agree on imaging is actually a misconception,” Haymart said. “There’s wide variation in the type of imaging that we’re using after the initial treatment for thyroid cancer.”
