Diabetes educator Susan Weiner honored by Diabetes Research Institute Foundation
The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation conferred its Dare to Dream Award on Susan Weiner, MS, RDN, CDE, CDN, at the organization’s 11th Annual Dreams in the City gala in New York.
“Susan was chosen for this special recognition for her remarkable dedication and commitment to improving the lives of people with type 1 diabetes,” according to a foundation press release.
Weiner is the Endocrine Today Diabetes in Real Life columnist and the American Association of Diabetes Educators 2015 Diabetes Educator of the Year.
The “dream” in the Dare to Dream Award is for a cure for diabetes, according to Lindsey Inserra-Hughes, chair of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) Foundation’s Young Professionals.

“We all want a cure for diabetes,” Weiner told the audience when she accepted the award. “And to that end we must do more for the cure. I encourage all of you to stretch out your arms, widen your circles, look further than you’ve ever looked before to include everyone in your communities in our vision to do more for the cure. Let’s join forces, people with diabetes and their families, researchers, doctors, CDEs, the medical community, industry, media ... and combine our efforts so we can do more for the cure.”
Until there is a cure, nutritional education like that provided by Weiner plays a central role in management of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, DRI Director Camillo Ricordi, MD, said.
The Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is a comprehensive research center dedicated to curing diabetes, with current work focusing on development of a biological cure through restoring natural insulin production.
