New program combines prescription treatment, weight-loss plan for obesity management

A new program, the Smart Changes Program, may help people who make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight succeed in their goal, according to a press release.

The program is the first to combine a 14-day, free trial offer of Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate extended-release, Vivus) with a free, 3-month subscription to the Mayo Clinic Diet.

In a survey that evaluated comprehensive weight-loss programs, 36% of participants reported they would have trouble following through on the plan, 33% reported they know which food choices to make but may struggle making healthier choices and 28% reported feeling hungry all of the time. The survey was conducted in November and included 759 adults with overweight or obesity, as well as a comorbidity.

The Smart Changes Program would combine the Mayo Clinic Diet as well as the use of Qsymia, an FDA-approved therapy for the treatment of obesity.

“The Smart Changes Program is designed to help people get the most out of their efforts,” Scott Kahan, MD, MPH, director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness, said in the release. “FDA-approved Qsymia has been formulated both to reduce hunger and help you feel full, and the Mayo Clinic Diet’s clinically testing techniques can help you build behavioral changes for lasting success.”
