A partnership has recently been announced between DexCom Inc. and the life sciences team at Google to develop a series of continuous glucose monitoring products that would be smaller and less expensive than those currently on the market, according to a press release from DexCom.

“This partnership has the potential to change the face of diabetes technology forever,” Kevin Sayer, president and CEO of DexCom, said in the release. “Working together, we believe we can introduce products that will move us beyond our core type 1 business to become the standard of care for all people living with diabetes.”

DexCom and Google will focus on minimizing the cost and size of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) as well as making them disposable and for use across all diabetes markets.

The partnership will aim to help patients with diabetes control their disease as well as to produce products that could ultimately end finger prick tests.

“We’re committed to developing new technologies that will help move health care from reactive to proactive,” Andrew Conrad, head of the life sciences team at Google, said in the release. “This collaboration is another step towards expanding monitoring options and making it easier for people with diabetes to proactively manage their health.”
