CORONADO, Calif. — Bryan R. Haugen, MD, professor of medicine and pathology, University of Colorado School of Medicine, discussed likely new guidelines for thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer at the American Thyroid Association Annual Meeting.

Haugen, professor of medicine and pathology, University of Colorado School of Medicine, expects the revised and renewed guidelines to come out in early 2015, and should include approximately 21 new recommendations over and above the 2009 guidelines.

Some highlights include:

  • An assessment of the use of molecular markers as tools in aiding patients who have thyroid nodules with indeterminate biopsies.
  • New recommendations on the use of radioactive iodine.
  • An examination of the subset of patients with advanced thyroid cancer who can no longer be treated with surgery and radioactive iodine, and how to define those patients.
