Drug campaign shows weight management struggles

In a national television advertising campaign promoting FDA-approved Belviq (lorcaserin HCl) CIV, Eisai Inc. shows struggles people who are obese, or overweight with a comorbidity, commonly face in their efforts to lose or control weight.

The 2-minute commercial — airing on networks including Lifetime, Oxygen and AMC — promotes the drug as a targeted approach to weight loss and management when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity.

“For many Americans trying to lose weight, diet and exercise alone are not enough,” Michael O'Brien, vice president of specialty marketing at Eisai, said in a press release. “Our goal with this new ad is to turn up the volume on the conversation — using realistic situations and questions that real people encounter — to raise awareness and encourage those who continue to struggle with their weight to speak to their doctor about BELVIQ as part of a weight loss regimen.”

The drug is indicated for use in patients with BMI ≥30 or BMI ≥27 with at least one weight-related medical condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes.
