An NIH-funded trial is under way that is seeking patients with a family history of type 1 diabetes to help delay or prevent its progression, according to a press release.

The Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet is different from other trials because patients are able to register online. They will then receive a screening kit in the mail that includes a questionnaire and instructions to receive a blood test at a local laboratory at no cost, according to the press release.

“By ensuring the safety of people’s personal information while also making it easier to participate in clinical trials, we hope to find more people who are at risk and want to help find ways to delay or prevent type 1 diabetes,” TrialNet Program Director Ellen Leschek, MD, of the NIH’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, said in the release.

Typically only three or four of 100 patients will demonstrate antibodies with an increased risk for type 1 diabetes, according to the NIH.
