BLOG: Career Development Workshops offer opportunities for clinicians and scientists
SAN FRANCISCO — For clinicians and scientists who are early on in their careers, navigating the landscape of their chosen field can be daunting. In this blog post, Kristen R. Vella, PhD, ex-officio of the Trainee & Career Development Core Committee Co-Chair of The Endocrine Society, shares her recommendations for important sessions at ENDO 2013 that may help guide early career professionals.

Career Development Workshops
Did you know that ENDO 2013 has a wide range of career development programs for early career professionals? These programs focus on topics for both clinicians and scientists.

Kristen R. Vella
Saturday featured two Career Development Workshops (CDWs): “Setting Up and Managing Your Lab” and “Setting Up and Negotiating Your Clinical Practice.” As an early career scientist who will be setting up her own lab in the next year or so, Andrea Gore, PhD, from the University of Texas at Austin, laid out several very helpful tips to navigating the early stages of running my own lab, including things I had not thought about. It is a very intense period in a scientist’s career and having a clear plan can be the key to one’s success.
Sunday’s topics included “Careers in Industry” and “Opportunities for International Early Career Professionals.”
Monday and Tuesday
There are four CDWs on Monday and two on Tuesday. I encourage everyone to check out the remaining topics, which include “Negotiations: Basic and Clinical Research,” “Case Presentations of Research Misconduct,” “How to Write a Successful Career Development Award Application,” “Writing a Successful R01 or Other Independent Research Grant Application,” “Mentorship with Women in Endocrinology,” and “Loan Repayment Program.” These are all held in Room 120 in the Moscone Center, except for the grant writing programs, which require pre-registration.
