The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists has announced it is behind a bill that would create a public-private commission of endocrinologists and other diabetes health care providers, patient advocates and federal representatives to identify gaps in existing clinical care initiatives, according to a press release.

The National Diabetes Clinical Care Commission Act was introduced to the US House of Representatives (H.R. 1074) and the Senate (S. 539) on March 12.

“With 26 million adults and children in our nation suffering daily from this debilitating condition, the stakes couldn’t be any higher,” Alan J. Garber, MD, PhD, Endocrine Today Chief Medical Editor and president of AACE, said in a press release. “Then you factor in the 35% of the US population that is prediabetic and the 17% of our country’s children and adolescents who are obese, a known precursor to diabetes, and it becomes evident that unless we invest federal dollars wisely and create innovative approaches to diabetes care, the impact to our economy and health care system could be catastrophic.”

According to a press release, the bill is aimed at creating new initiatives and approaches to improving diabetes care. Once gaps in clinical care are identified, the commission will file its recommendations for the improvements to the US Secretary of Health and Human Services and Congress.
