Beneath the Surface is a video series in which Joel M. Gelfand, MD, MSCE, Healio Dermatology Chief Medical Editor, discusses hot topics in the field with leading experts.
In this edition, Gelfand, who is also the James J. Leyden Professor of Clinical Investigation and professor of dermatology and epidemiology at University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, discusses the role of artificial intelligence in dermatology practice with Roxana Daneshjou, MD, PhD, assistant professor of biomedical data science and dermatology at Stanford School of Medicine.
In this in-depth conversation, Gelfand and Daneshjou delve into where AI models are now and what the possibilities are for the future in medicine.
From diagnosing with imaging software to assisting with notes, the possibilities are endless for AI, but physicians need to be careful as these technologies grow to incorporate them in the safest and most responsible ways, according to Daneshjou.
“As leaders in diagnosing skin disease ... we should be the ones leading the charge. We should be the ones giving feedback on how these things are being developed and implemented and ultimately making their way into clinic,” she said.
