Key takeaways:

  • Social media has increased the exposure of neck liposuction to patients in their 20s and 30s.
  • Dermatologists should refer their patients interested in this procedure to a facial plastic surgeon.

Liposuction was the most in-demand surgical cosmetic procedure in 2022, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons cosmetic surgery insights and trends report.

The procedure eliminates excess fat and helps to contour areas not successfully impacted by diet and exercise. Some of these areas, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website, include the abdomen, thighs and parts of the face, such as the cheeks, chin and neck.

The society’s 2022 report also found that, despite economic uncertainties, more than 80% of plastic surgeons polled reported overall patient interest in plastic surgery to be steady or increasing. Further, 59% reported patients are willing to spend “somewhat more” on these procedures, and 19% see patients willing to spend “a lot more.”

Konstantin Vasyukevich

Healio spoke to Konstantin Vasyukevich, MD, a private facial plastic surgeon in New York, about the recent surge in neck liposuction and what patients should be aware of concerning this procedure.

Healio: Why has there been such an increased interest recently in neck liposuction?

Vasyukevich: Neck liposuction is an effective minimally invasive procedure that can improve the contour of the lower face and neck. It is quick, relatively inexpensive and has a fairly short recovery. With the increased exposure of younger demographics to social media, this type of cosmetic procedures enjoy increase in popular demand.

Healio: In your experience, what patient population is the most likely to get neck liposuction?

Vasyukevich: Patients in their 20s and early 30s are the most common group requesting neck liposuction.

Healio: What are the benefits of neck liposuction?

Vasyukevich: Liposuction can improve the neck contour and make the lower face appear slimmer.

Healio: What are the risks?

Vasyukevich: The risks of the actual procedure are fairly mild and mostly related to some postoperative bruising and swelling. Other complications such as infections, asymmetry and prolonged discomfort are very uncommon.

Healio: How should dermatologists advise patients that may be interested in this procedure?

Vasyukevich: Dermatologists should recommend their patients to seek a consultation of a facial plastic surgeon. It would be a fairly unusual situation when treatment from a dermatologist would be required for a patient after neck liposuction. This could only be assessed on an individual case basis.
