In honor of Rosacea Awareness Month, Healio has compiled a list of the most prevalent rosacea information published in 2023.

The top story detailed the importance of patience and consistency during rosacea treatment, which was the National Rosacea Society’s theme of this year’s awareness month. Rounding out the list is a story that expounds on this topic in a way that is applicable in the office.

Q&A: Patience, consistency key in rosacea treatment

According to a press release from the National Rosacea Society, despite dermatologists recommending patients try a new therapy for at least 12 weeks before disregarding it, more than 75% of rosacea patients reported only giving new treatments 1 month to present results. More than half said they only allow a product 2 weeks or less to show improvement. In this Q&A, Healio spoke with Estee Williams, MD, about the importance of consistency and patience in rosacea treatment and how dermatologists can best treat patients who struggle with these elements. Paroxetine effective in refractory erythema of rosacea treatment

In February, Ben Wang, MD, and colleagues published a study showing paroxetine was effective and well tolerated among patients with refractory erythema of rosacea. The potent selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor allowed 42.9% of patients to experience clear or almost clear results, according to a study. Read more.

Combination therapies often needed in rosacea treatment

Rosacea is a complicated disease that requires a combination of treatments and lifestyle changes. Using multiple treatment options is important because more than one medication or treatment is likely necessary to address all phenotypes a patient is experiencing.

“The drugs for papules and pustules do not work for erythema and the drugs for erythema do not work for papules and pustules,” Hilary Baldwin, MD, said during a presentation at South Beach Symposium. “So, the patient with combination disease needs two, at least, medications or medication plus a procedure in order to get better. This is a big deal for a patient.” Read more.

Enrollment complete in DFD-29 phase 3 trials for papulopustular rosacea

In January, Journey Medical Corporation announced that it had completed enrollment in its phase 3 clinical program evaluating the safety and efficacy of DFD-29 for the treatment of papulopustular rosacea. The company stated that the program, consisting of two multicenter, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, active-comparator and placebo-controlled clinical trials, MVOR-01 and MVOR-02, may hopefully support a new drug application in the second half of 2023.
