Bayer, Coppertone recall products due to benzene
Bayer is recalling unexpired Lotrimin AF and Tinactin spray products, while Coppertone is recalling 12 lots of six different aerosol sunscreen sprays, the FDA announced.
The recalls are due to the presence of benzene, a human carcinogen, found in some samples of the products. No reports of adverse events have been reported to either company to date.

“Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin. Depending on duration and level of exposure, it can result in cancers including leukemia, and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening,” the FDA said in a press release.
Bayer’s antifungal Lotrimin AF and Tinactin sprays distributed between September 2018 and September 2021 with lot numbers beginning with TN, CV or NAA are included in the recall.
- Coppertone’s recall includes:
- Pure & Simple SPF 50 5 oz (Lot numbers TN00CJ4 and TN00BR2);
- Pure & Simple Kids SPF 50 5 oz (TN00857, TN00CJV, TN00854 and TN00855);
- Pure & Simple Baby SPF 50 5 oz (TN009GH, TN0083K, TN0083J);
- Sport Mineral SPF 50 5 oz (TN008KU, TN008KV); and
- Travel-size Sport Spray SPF 50 1.6 oz (TN00BU3).
Those who have the products should immediately stop use and properly dispose the products. A physician or health care provider should be contacted if there are any problems related to their use.
