Lower levels of retinoid receptor expression correlated to hand eczema, according to a poster presented at American Academy of Dermatology virtual meeting.

In a case-control study, 30 patients with hand eczema and 30 age- and sex-matched control patients completed a full clinical examination and skin biopsy. RAR and RXR tissue levels were evaluated in both groups.

The study found the level of RAR and RXR expression was significantly downgraded in the active group compared to the control group (P < .001).

“The down-regulated expression of RAR and RXR proved that they play an important role in the pathogenesis of hand eczema, as well as the disease phenotype and severity,” the study authors wrote.

Levels of RAR and RXR expression also showed a statistically significant correlation to the Osnabrück hand severity index (P < .001). A correlation was also found between RAR and erythema (P = .030) and RXR and skin papules (P = .030).
