Some 500 dermatologists will gather in Maui this weekend for the sixth annual Maui Derm for Dermatologists meeting. If all goes as planned, they will leave the Hawaiian island with actionable strategies to put to immediate use in the clinic.

George Martin, MD, program director for Maui Derm 2020, told Healio that the meeting — which runs Jan. 25 to 29 — will feature 35 to 40 hours of CME activities conducted by “top level” key opinion leaders representing all of the dermatology field.

“The program will cover every segment of dermatology, from cutaneous oncology and psoriasis to lasers and surgeries to pigmentation disorders,” Martin said. “Each segment will be highlighted by panel discussions, bench science research, as well as clinically relevant information that you can take back to your practice and put to use Monday morning. The program will be filled with the latest data and clinical pearls.”

Martin said the meeting’s organizers wanted to “shy away from talking heads” in favor of interactive activities, live injections on stage and small group workshops. “We wanted to drill down on cases and conundrums that dermatologists face in their practice every day,” he said. “There will be something for every dermatologist.”

Approximately two-thirds of the program will focus on medical dermatology, according to Martin. The remaining one-third will cover cosmetic topics such as laser neuromodulators and dermal fillers, among others. “About 80% of dermatologists do both medical and some degree of cosmetic dermatology,” he said. “The program will appeal to those who do both. It will reflect what their practice looks like.”

In terms of the top level faculty Martin mentioned, some of the experts who will present or run panel discussions include R. Rox Anderson, MD, PhD, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School; Sheila Fallon-Friedlander, MD, professor of dermatology and pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, and director of the dermatology fellowship training program at Rady Children’s Hospital; Bruce E. Strober, MD, PhD, professor of dermatology and director of clinical trials at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington; Craig L. Leonardi, MD, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at St. Louis University Medical School; Arthur Kavanaugh, MD, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine; and Ilona Frieden, MD, a pediatric dermatologist at the University of California, San Francisco, Benioff Children’s Hospital.

“This is a who’s who in the fields of atopic dermatitis, injectables, immunobullous diseases and blistering, pediatric dermatology, and many others,” Martin said. “Of course, we will have the chairpersons of departments here presenting and attending, but the people on the panels will also include mainstream dermatologists who understand the challenges of everyday practice.”

For Martin, another attractive component of Maui Derm is that the size of the meeting is manageable. “We offer many of the same speakers you will see at the American Academy of Dermatology meeting without having to run all over the place to find a session,” he said. “These speakers will give the highlights of what they are going to talk about at the Academy sessions, and it will include panels where attendees can interact and ask questions.”

Looking beyond the clinical program, Martin highlighted two dinners and receptions — or “luaus” as the case may be — that will take place on the lawn of the Grand Wailea Maui resort. “This is a reunion of sorts,” he said. “People bring their families, they catch up with colleagues they have not seen for a year or more. Friendships are created and sustained by the ocean in this beautiful location.” – by Rob Volansky
