Platelet-rich plasma reduced recovery time in lipofilling
The addition of platelet-rich plasma during lipofilling for the restoration of tissue volume was associated with a shorter recovery duration; however, plasma did not best saline at rejuvenating impact or patient satisfaction.
The single-center, double blinded, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial included 32 women treated between 2012 and 2015. The final analysis included 25 women who completed follow-up.
All eligible participants underwent aesthetic facial lipofilling procedures, while 13 received platelet-rich plasma and 12 received saline.
Platelet-rich plasma showed no benefit over saline in terms of skin elasticity, graft volume maintenance in the nasolabial fold, or patient satisfaction. Patients reported overall satisfaction as “moderate,” according to the results.
However, parameters of recovery time were improved in the platelet-rich plasma group. Patients treated with plasma returned to work and social activities with camouflaging agents after 9 days compared with 15 days in the saline arm (P < .01). Patients in the plasma arm also returned to returned to work or social activities without camouflaging agents faster (P < .05).
“Addition of [platelet-rich plasma] speeds up recovery, but does not increase patient satisfaction,” the researchers concluded. “Overall, the level of recommendation of the procedure to peers was negative for both groups, mainly as told by them because of higher expectations of the effect of the procedure.” – by Rob Volansky
