Worldwide demand for cosmetic surgery continues dramatic increases

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery published results of the annual Global Aesthetic Survey that showed a 9% overall increase in surgical and nonsurgical procedures for 2016.

The United States was the leader, accounting for 17.9% of the procedures. The top five countries, were the U.S., Brazil, Japan, Italy, and Mexico, which together accounted for 41.4% of procedures globally. Russia, India, Turkey, Germany, and France rounded out the top 10.

Labiaplasty showed the biggest increase from 2015, with a 45% increase in procedures from 2015. Lower body lift procedures increased by 29%, while upper body lift, breast augmentation using fat transfer, and buttock lifts increased by 20% or more.

More than 15% of the procedures were breast augmentations, solidifying its ongoing hold as the most popular procedure. Liposuction, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty and abdominoplasty were the other most commonly reported procedures.

Penile enlargement was the least popular surgery in 2016, demonstrating a 28% decrease in procedures.

Injectable procedures with botulinum toxin remained the most popular nonsurgical intervention, with a 7% increase during the 12-month interval.

Women comprised 86.2% of all cosmetic procedures globally. Breast augmentation, liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty and breast lift were the most common procedures among women.

The most common interventions in men — who comprised 13.8% of procedures worldwide — included eyelid surgery, gynecomastia, rhinoplasty, liposuction and hair transplant.

The current data set comprised results of a survey sent to approximately 35,000 plastic surgeons.

“These results confirm something that most board-certified plastic surgeons already knew — that the demand for cosmetic procedures is stronger than ever,” Renato Saltz, MD, president of The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, said in the statement. “Around the world, we are seeing record numbers of patients looking to take advantage of the latest innovations in cosmetic surgery to look and feel better about themselves.” – by Rob Volansky
