Google search correlates with melanoma, other cancer incidence rates

Google search volume correlated with state-specific cancer incidence and mortality rates for melanoma and other common cancers, according to recently published study results in JAMA Dermatology.
Mackenzie R. Wehner, MD, MPhil, of the dermatology department at the University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues conducted a cross-sectional analysis of Google search volume index data and incidences and mortalities of eight of the 10 most common cancers, including melanoma, between 2009 and 2013 in the United States at the state level.
The researchers used the National Program of Cancer Registries for age-adjusted cancer incidence and mortality rates. Google search volume index data were downloaded in September 2016.
There was a statistically significant correlation between relative Google search volume by state and cancer incidence rates for colon cancer (R = 0.61), lung cancer (R = 0.73), lymphoma (R = 0.51), melanoma (R = 0.36) and thyroid cancer (R = 0.3). Relative Google search volume and cancer-specific mortality rates had statistically significant correlations for colon cancer (R = 0.71), lung cancer (R = 0.62), lymphoma (R = 0.38) and melanoma (R = 0.31).
There was no correlation with incidence or mortality rates for breast cancer, prostate cancer or bladder cancer.
“For several cancers, including colon, lung, lymphoma and melanoma, state-specific relative Google search volume positively correlates with state-specific cancer incidence and mortality rates recorded by the National Program of Cancer Registries,” the researchers wrote.
“Population-level disease metrics are critically important to guide the distribution of resources and design of public health initiatives,” the researchers concluded. “Internet search data may provide useful estimates of disease, such as incidence, particularly where registry data are insufficient, lagging or lacking.” – by Bruce Thiel
