Bullous pemphigoid demonstrated some association with hematologic malignancy despite showing no association with overall malignancy.

In the current meta-analysis, researchers found eight cross-sectional, case-control, or cohort studies examining these associations in Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases.

No association was observed between bullous pemphigoid and overall cancer in any of the findings. In one of the single cohort data sets, lymphoid leukemia, along with kidney and larynx cancer, were found. However, pooled analysis of the case-control studies failed to reveal this association.

Results of a pooled analysis of the cross-sectional studies indicated that bullous pemphigoid was significantly associated with hematologic malignancies, according to the results.

The researchers acknowledged that it may be difficult to draw conclusions from these findings because there were so few well-designed studies investigating the potential correlation. – by Rob Volansky
