Increased nasal tip projection may cause upper lip projection

A measurable increase in upper lip projection was observed with increases in nasal tip projection among a cohort of patients undergoing rhinoplasty.

The study included 20 patients undergoing primary rhinoplasty from Oct. 1, 2014 through Sept. 25, 2015. Researchers assessed preoperative and postoperative photographs to determine increased tip projection and the Z angle to calculate upper lip projection. Vermilion height also underwent analysis.

An increase in upper lip projection was reported in 90% of the cohort when a columellar strut or tongue-in-groove maneuver was used, according to the results.

A decrease of 2.7° (95% CI, 1.5-3.9) was observed for the Z angle, which the researchers reported was statistically significant. No significant change was reported in terms of vermilion height. However, a trend toward an increase in this outcome of 0.051 observed (95% CI, –0.00515 to –0.10685). – by Rob Volansky
