Bellus Medical announced it has acquired Allumera, a topical cream that is in a new class of photodynamic cosmetics.

Allumera, the first photodynamic cosmetic cream specifically formulated to improve the overall skin appearance, reduce signs of aging and minimize the appearance of pores with minimal downtime, was acquired from Photocure, according to a news release. Allumera is applied by a health care professional and activated by a variety of light sources that include red, blue, intense pulsed light and pulsed dye laser.

“Allumera fills a gap in the medical aesthetics market, and this acquisition provides our medical practitioner partners with a tremendous opportunity to grow their practices with this non-invasive anti-aging option for their patients,” Joe Proctor, Bellus Medical president and CEO, stated in the release.

Bellus Medical announced it plans to launch Allumera in the fourth quarter of 2017.
