Cryolipolysis associated with fat layer reduction in submental region

Bilateral submental cyrolipolysis demonstrated safety and efficacy in reducing lateral and central fat a small cohort of patients.

The researchers treated 14 patients for unwanted subcutaneous fat between Jan. 22 and June 30, 2016. They used a small-volume cup applicator to deliver two treatments, which were administered over two treatment cycles of 45 minutes each. The first involved bilateral treatments. Patients were then reassessed at 6 weeks to determine how many cycles would be required for a satisfactory result.

The safety profile demonstrated mild numbness and tingling that resolved at 12 weeks, but otherwise, the events were manageable, according to the researchers.

An independent review of 42 pretreatment and posttreatment digital photographs yielded an 81% (95% CI, 65.9-91.4) correct identification rate.

A mean fat layer reduction of 2.3 mm (range, 0.7-3.5 mm) was observed from caliper measurements. The reduction in fat volume was 4.82 cm3 — from a reduction of 32.69 cm3 to an increase of 13.85 cm3 — according to 3-D imaging results. Other findings from the 3-D imaging analysis revealed a reduction in skin surface area of 1.29 cm2 (from a reduction of 3.18 cm2 to an increase of 0.99 cm2) and in fat thickness of 3.77 mm (from of reduction of 13.1 mm to an increase of 0.47 mm).
