National Psoriasis Foundation recognizes OTC botanical treatment

The National Psoriasis Foundation has given its seal of recognition to MetaDerm Heal & Prevent cream, an over-the-counter therapeutic botanical treatment for psoriasis, according to a press release from Haus Bioceuticals.

“Psoriasis therapy is reactive; flares are oftentimes managed with topical corticosteroids with limited efficacy and undesirable side effects,” Michael Centola, PhD, CEO of Haus Bioceuticals, told Healio.com/Dermatology. “We developed MetaDerm, a novel therapeutic botanical complex, utilizing broad-based mechanism of action studies.”

The recognition highlights over-the-counter (OTC) products that are proven safe and effective in the management of psoriasis symptoms, according to the release.

The product was independently reviewed by a panel of five dermatology medical experts and tested by five people with moderate-to-severe psoriasis, who must agree that the product relieves psoriasis symptoms and is easy to use and apply before the seal of recognition is granted, according to the release.

The MetaDerm cream is one of the first products with active therapeutic botanical to receive the recognition.

“In multiple clinical trials, our Heal & Prevent Cream profoundly decreased psoriasis disease activity in the majority of patients (75% or greater decrease in 92% of patients), and reduced the likelihood and severity of future flare-ups,” Centola said. “Moreover, unlike common solutions, no adverse events or side effects were observed, which is not surprising given that natural botanicals are the source of MetaDerm’s efficacy.”

The cream showed significant improvement for psoriasis in four weeks versus a prescription psoriasis treatment in the clinical trials. At week 12, almost 68 percent of patients using MetaDerm obtained improvement in Psoriasis Ares Severity Index score of greater than or equal to 75 percent.

MetaDerm Heal & Prevent cream is steroid-free and is most effective when used twice per day, according to the release.

“Meeting the requirements to receive the NPF Seal of Recognition is no easy feat,” Randy Beranek, president and CEO of the National Psoriasis Foundation, stated in the release. “Our standards are high and the certification process stringent. We appreciate the manufacturers that are committed to helping the psoriasis community by developing quality products that ease the symptoms of psoriasis and provide much needed relief to many.”  by Bruce Thiel
