Subfascial calf augmentation surgery was found to be a safe procedure by a surgeon with extensive experience in the field.

In the current study, the researchers retrospectively reviewed 134 patients undergoing this procedure for indications ranging from cosmetic to reconstructive. Patient accrual occurred between 2003 and 2015.

There were two groups in the cohort. One group included primary cases and the other included patients who experienced complications with a previous calf augmentation procedure.

Results showed that the subfascial approach was used most commonly in primary cases. The researchers wrote that this approach is safe and easily reproducible, with a short recovery duration and a complication rate less than 1%.

Best cosmetic outcomes can be achieved by individually selecting implants. Fat grafting is a powerful tool for secondary cases, according to the findings. This approach may be used alone or with implants.

It may be necessary to develop a new implant based on anatomical findings and observed surgical outcomes, the researchers concluded. – by Rob Volansky
