Women who receive textured breast implants were at significant risk for breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, according to recent findings.
The researchers conducted a retrospective review of breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma incidence in the U.S. to determine the prevalence its prevalence among women with textured breast implants. Data from 1996 to 2015 underwent analysis.
The researchers identified 100 pathologically confirmed cases with a mean interval between implantation and diagnosis of 10.7 ± 4.6 years.
The cohort included 49 patients who were treated for cosmetic reasons, 44 for mastectomy reconstruction and seven for reasons that were not clearly identified.
Working from the assumption that this complication occurs only in textured implants, the results indicated an incidence rate of 2.03 per 1,000,000 person-years, 203 per 100 million. This rate is 67.6 times higher than the rate of 3 per 100 million observed for anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (P < .001).
Among women with textured breast implants, a lifetime prevalence of 33 per million people was reported. – by Rob Volansky
