Comorbidities, lower socioeconomic status predicted hospital revisit after septorhinoplasty

Patients with medical comorbidities or lower socioeconomic status were at an increased risk for hospital revisit after septorhinoplasty, according to recent findings.

The researchers analyzed risk factors for hospital revisits within 30 days of septorhinoplasty. The retrospective cohort analysis included 175,842 patients who underwent the procedure between Jan. 1, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2009.

Results showed that 11,456 patients (6.5%) returned to the hospital within 30 days of septorhinoplasty. Of this group, 6,353 (55.5%) were to the ED.

Bleeding or epitaxis was the most common diagnosis, occurring in 1.2% of patients.

Multivariate analysis results indicated that patients aged 41 to 65 years or those older than 65 years were at an increased risk for hospital revisit, as were black patients, those covered by Medicare or Medicaid, and patients with autoimmune disorders or autoimmune deficiency, alcohol use or anxiety. Conchal cartilage graft also predicted revisit, according to the results.
