Extra full projection implants for breast augmentation present similar short-term outcomes compared with other shaped implants, according to study results published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal.

The retrospective study included 310 female patients who underwent primary breast augmentation. The procedures were carried out by the first author, Paolo Montemurro, MD, between January 2009 and December 2015. Mean patient age was 30.8 years (range, 18-56 years), and the average BMI was 21.3 kg/m2 (range, 15.9-30.1 kg/m2).

“Our indications for the use of extra full projection implants are based on the anatomic characteristics of the breast tissue as well as patient’s wishes,” the researchers wrote. The researchers noted that patients with a narrow chest seeking large volume increases, common in their practice, are better suited for the full projection implants compared with wider implants that may create an unnatural look and feel.

A total of 620 Allergan Style 410 implants were used (Allergan, Irvine, Calif.), with a mean volume of 338 cc (range, 195-615 cc).

Thirty-nine patients developed a postoperative complication during follow up, which was a mean period of 12.6 months (range, 6-72 months). The complications included implant rotation (n = 17), capsular contracture (n = 8), bottoming out (n = 5), double bubble (n = 4), hematoma (n = 4), and seroma (n = 1).

Forty-one patients returned for reoperation related to complications (n = 30) or by choice (n = 11). Of those that returned by choice, nine patients requested a larger implant, one requested a smaller implant, and one requested explantation.

The researchers noted that while the complication rate of implant rotation was relatively high, 13 of the 17 rotations occurred in the first half of the case series. According to the researchers, this suggests that complication rates can decrease over time with experience. – by Talitha Bennett
