The use of hyaluronic acid filler for women with mild to severe hypotrophy of the labia majora is a safe and effective technique, according to study results published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal.

The researchers retrospectively reviewed 54 patients who had undergone treatment with hyaluronic acid filler for hypotrophy of the labia majora between November 2010 and December 2014. Mean age of the patients was 45 years (range, 36-68 years).

Of the 54 patients, 31 were treated with 19 mg/mL hyaluronic acid filler for mild to moderate hypotrophy, whereas 23 were treated with 21 mg/mL for severe hypotrophy.

Infiltration of the filler was performed in two layers with approximately one-third placed in the subcutaneous layer and the remaining two-thirds injected between the lip dartos and the fibrous tunic in a fan-shaped fashion, the researchers wrote.

Aesthetic results of the procedure were rated by the individual patient and a single independent observer using the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale, ranging from 1 (no change) to 10 (great improvement) at both baseline (preoperative) and 12-month follow-up, according to the researchers.

All patients returned for the 12-month follow-up, and an improvement (P < .0001) was observed by patients and the observing doctors. The patient preoperative score improved from an average of 5.26 (range, 2-9) to an average of 8.7 (range, 6-10). The doctors’ preoperative score improved from 5.98 (range, 2-9) to an average of 8.52 (range, 6-10), according to the researchers.

Patients who were affected by severe hypotrophy reported an even greater relative improvement from 4.04 (range, 2-6) preoperatively to 8.35 (range, 6-10) at follow-up. The doctors’ results similarly improved from 4.74 (range, 2-6) to 8.17 (range, 6-10).

The researchers noted that no complications were observed. – by Talitha Bennett
