Certain antibiotic therapy may be inducing antibiotic resistance in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa, according to study results recently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Researchers conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 239 patients diagnosed with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) who were seen between 2010 and 2015 at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. The patients had bacterial culture data from HS lesions. Read more

Patients satisfied with surgery results for hidradenitis suppurativa

Patients who underwent surgical management of hidradenitis suppurativa reported satisfaction with the results, according to research published in Dermatologic Surgery.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, mailed questionnaires to 499 patients with hidradenitis suppurativa who underwent surgical management to determine surgical outcome, satisfaction and quality of life. Read more

Hidradenitis suppurativa linked to higher frequency of subclinical atherosclerosis

Patients with hidradenitis suppurativa had a higher frequency of subclinical atherosclerosis, and researchers recommended the condition be classified as carrying an increased cardiovascular risk, according to data published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Marcos A. González-López, MD, PhD, from the division of dermatology at the Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla, Instituto de Investigación Marqués de Valdecilla and University of Cantabria, Santander in Cantabria, Spain, and colleagues evaluated 68 patients with hidradenitis suppurativa and 136 age-and gender-matched control patients. Read more

Lower socioeconomic status associated with hidradenitis suppurativa

Patients with hidradenitis suppurativa had a lower socioeconomic status compared with the general population, according to results of a study recently published in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Researchers in the Netherlands conducted a multicenter study by collecting data from 1,018 patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS; 71.7% female; mean age, 38.7 years) and 2,039 age- and sex-matched dermatologic patients (71.8% female; mean age, 38.9 years) as controls. Read more
