VIDEO: Data verifies greater risk of surgical site infection in certain patient demographics

LOS ANGELES — James C. Grotting, MD, discusses research presented at Plastic Surgery the Meeting that found certain patient demographics and comorbidities have a higher risk of developing surgical site infections.
Grotting, a clinical professor of plastic surgery at the University of Alabama and the University of Wisconsin, and colleagues presented a paper detailing results gathered from the CosmetAssure insurance database program.
The results showed that patients at the greatest risk for surgical site infections include female patients in general, patients who are obese, smoke, have diabetes or are undergoing multiple procedures.
“So it’s interesting that we have been able to essentially verify what all of us have suspected by our experience, by our intuition, over the years, but the CosmetAssure database now allows us to say with certainty which patients are at a greater risk for surgical site infection,” Grotting told Healio.com/Aesthetics.
