Merz North America announced it has acquired ON Light Sciences, a U.S. medical device company that develops technologies to enhance laser-based dermatologic procedures, including the DeScribe Transparent PFD Patch for laser tattoo removal.

The DeScribe Transparent PFD (perfluorodcalin) Patch, has been FDA 510(k) cleared and CE marked, according to a press release from Merz. It is placed over tattoos prior to irradiation, enabling rapid multiple laser passes in a single treatment session.

Significant optical clearing of tissue, protection of the epidermis and inhibition of back-splatter and fumes are also provided by the patch, according to the release.

Patients receiving laser tattoo removal reported less discomfort and faster healing post-treatment with the DeScribe Transparent PFD Patch, the release reported.

“Merz North America’s robust aesthetic portfolio continues to strategically grow through innovative products addressing conditions with fast-growing demand such as tattoo removal,” Bill Humphries, Merz North America president and CEO, stated in the release.

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery has reported that tattoo removal is one of the fastest-growing laser procedures, according to the release.
