Nearly 60% of consumers surveyed consider cosmetic procedures

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery has released annual survey results suggesting that nearly 60% of consumers are considering a cosmetic medical procedure, almost double the 30% response rate in 2013, according to a press release.

“Cosmetic medical treatments continue to grow in popularity,” Naomi Lawrence, MD, ASDS president, stated in the release. “One of the key reasons why is because patients trust their dermatologists and the advanced techniques and cutting edge technologies that will improve their appearance.”

The annual ASDS Consumer Survey on Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures rated overall consumer views on cosmetic medical treatments for 10 specific procedures, according to the release.

Physician expertise was rated highly among 11 factors influencing the selection of a practitioner, according to the release, including the specialty in which the physicians is board-certified, the level of the physician’s licensure and referral from a physician.

Wanting “to feel more confident” was the top reason for considering a cosmetic procedure, according to the release. Other reasons were wanting “to feel more attractive” and “to look as young as I feel or better for my age.”

Ultrasound, laser, light and radiofrequency treatments for smoothing wrinkles or tightening skin were procedures being considered by 60% of surveyed consumers, according to the release. Other considered procedures were laser and light treatments for facial redness or to improve skin ton or scars, by 51% of participants; body sculpting, by 50% of participants; and laser hair removal by 48% of participants.

Excess weight in any part of the body was ranked first among the survey participants as what bothered them about their appearance.

Injectable wrinkle-relaxers; laser and light treatments for redness; laser and light treatments for redness, tone and scars; treatments to tighten skin or smooth wrinkles using ultrasound, laser, light and radiofrequency; vein treatments; microdermabrasion; and laser tattoo removal were treatment categories receiving a satisfaction rating of 95% or better, according to the release.
