Patients in Israel who received injections of Juvéderm Volbella in the tear trough area or lips had a higher than expected incidence of late cutaneous reactions, according to study results.

Researchers examined the medical records of 400 patients (360 women; average age, 49.6 years) who were treated with Juvéderm Volbella (hyaluronic acid; HA-Vb) filler at four medical centers in Israel. Read more

ASPS: Lip augmentation procedures see record increase in 2015

There were a record number of patients undergoing lip augmentation procedures in 2015, according to a press release from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Allergan acquires rights to potential topical treatment for under eye bags

Allergan plc announced in a press release that it has acquired Topokine Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on developing topical medicines for fat reduction.

Terms of the purchase include an upfront payment from Allergan of $85 million and success-based developments and sales milestones of XAF5, a first-in-class topical agent in late-stage development for treating steatoblepharon, or under eye bags, according to the release. Read more

Hyaluronic acid filler increases epidermal layers, collagen fibers

Patients who received hyaluronic acid dermal filler showed increased epidermal layers and collagen fibers at follow-up, according to recent research.

“In this study, the clinical and histological study of [hyaluronic acid] filler injections on photoaged faces revealed clinical improvement and skin remodeling after the procedure, with a long follow-up period,” Fabiana Braga França Wanick, MD, MSc, from the department of medical sciences at Fluminense Federal University in Niterói, Brazil, and colleagues wrote in their study.
