Survey finds acne and scars impact people's confidence

A majority of survey respondents believed that acne and acne scars have a negative effect on a person’s confidence, according to recently released results from Suneva Medical.

The survey also found that nearly half of respondents with acne scars or facial blemishes withdrew from social outings with friends, and that acne scars or blemishes prevented them from putting photos online without heavy editing or filters, according to a press release.

“Acne scarring is one of the most common skin issues I see at my practice and the condition is more than skin deep,” Ava Shamban, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Beverly Hills, California, stated in the release. “These individuals should not lose hope, however. There are new treatment options such as Bellafill that can have a transformational effect on patients’ lives and in turn, their quality of life.

Bellafill (polymethylmethacrylate collagen filler, SunevaMedical) is a dermal filler approved by the FDA for correcting moderate-to-severe, atrophic, distensible facial acne scars on the cheeks of adults aged 21 years and older.

Additional results from the survey include that 99% of survey respondents believe that a person has more confidence when acne and acne scars have cleared up.

Consumers in the survey reported that acne scars are worse than having acne, eczema or rosacea. Nearly half of the respondents reported still experiencing acne or acne scars, and 61% reported they would wear less makeup if they were able to effectively treat and minimize the acne scar appearance.

In addition, 54% of respondents reported not feeling confident on a date because of acne scars or facial blemishes, and 81% of respondents preferred clear skin over keeping up with current fashion trends or maintaining a hairstyle “that is rivaled by celebrities,” according to the release.

The survey results were released in recognition of Acne Awareness Month in June.
