Complication rates differ in types of acellular dermal matrices

Patients who underwent immediate implant-based breast reconstruction with FlexHD acellular dermal matrices were more likely to develop infection and other complications when compared with other acellular dermal matrices, including AlloDerm, according to study results.

Low risk for nipple sensation changes, lactation issues in primary breast augmentation

Women who underwent primary breast augmentation had low risk for skin and nipple sensation changes and lactation issues, according to study results published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal.

Researchers conducted an analysis based on 410 Continued Access study data to measure the safety and effectiveness of Natrelle 410 implants (Allergan plc) implanted by inframammary or periareolar incision locations. Read more

A majority of removed facial implants had some degree of biofilm formation, with porous polyethylene implants having more severe biofilm formation, according to study results published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.

Researchers analyzed facial implants explanted by a single surgeon from seven patients with previously placed alloplastic facial implants who underwent revision rhinoplasty and removal of facial implants between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013. Read more

Patients with hypothyroidism at risk for prolonged edema after face-lift surgery

A small subset of patients with hypothyroidism were prone to prolonged edema following face-lift surgery despite being treated with thyroid replacement therapy, according to study results published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.

Researchers conducted a retrospective review of 198 who underwent a face-lift between Jan. 1, 2014, and May 31, 2015. They identified four women (mean age, 63 years) with documented hypothyroidism and prolonged postoperative edema. Read more

Surgeons perform nation's first penile transplant

Massachusetts General Hospital announced that its team of surgeons performed the nation’s first genitourinary reconstructive (penile) transplant earlier this month.

The 15-hour procedure, led by Curtis L. Cetrulo Jr., MD, and Dicken S.C. Ko, MD, involved “surgically grafting the complex microscopic vascular and neural structures of a donor organ onto the comparable structures of the recipient,” according to a press release. Read more
