News that Eli Lilly and Company’s Taltz injection 80 mg/mL for treating moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis is now available by prescription order in the United States was among the most-read articles of the past week on Healio.com/Dermatology.

Other widely read articles included results from a nationwide study of Danish twins showing that psoriasis had a strong association with type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Lilly announces Taltz available in US to treat psoriasis

Eli Lilly and Company announced in a press release that Taltz injection 80 mg/mL for treating moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis is now available by prescription order through specialty pharmacies in the United States. 

Taltz (ixekizumab) was approved in March by the FDA for treating moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in adults who are candidates for systematic therapy or phototherapy. Read more

Psoriasis associated with type 2 diabetes, obesity in twin study

Psoriasis had a strong association with type 2 diabetes and obesity in a nationwide study of Danish twins, indicating a common genetic etiology between psoriasis and obesity, according to study results recently published in JAMA Dermatology.

Researchers in Denmark conducted a cross-sectional, population-based twin study that included 34,781 Danish twins born between 1931 and 1982, and aged 20 to 71 years. Read more

AAD survey finds men lag behind women in skin cancer knowledge

Men are less knowledgeable than women when it comes to skin cancer awareness, according to survey results released by the American Academy of Dermatology.

“While our survey results indicate that men don’t know as much about skin cancer prevention and detection as women, men over 50 have a higher risk of developing melanoma, so it’s important for them to be vigilant about protecting and monitoring their skin,” Abel Torres, MD, JD, FAAD, president of the AAD, stated in a press release. Melanoma organizations partner to educate beauty industry on skin cancer awareness

The Melanoma Action Coalition and the Melanoma Foundation of New England has paired with salons across the country to expand a skin cancer and melanoma awareness education program to beauty industry professionals, as part of Melanoma Awareness Month.

The Melanoma Foundation of New England (MFNE), the largest nonprofit in the new England Region dedicated to skin cancer awareness and early detection, began the “Skinny on Skin” program 6 years ago, and has trained more than 6,000 beauty industry professionals, according to a press release. ASPS: Lip augmentation procedures see record increase in 2015

There were a record number of patients undergoing lip augmentation procedures in 2015, according to a press release from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

“We live in the age of the selfie, and because we see images of ourselves almost constantly on a social media, we’re much more aware of how our lips look,” David H. Song, MD, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), stated in the release. Read more
