There were a record number of patients undergoing lip augmentation procedures in 2015, according to a press release from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Risk factors identified for skin cancer mortality after organ transplant

Older patients, male patients and thoracic transplant recipients were at increased risk for mortality from skin cancer following organ transplantation, according to recently published study results.

Researchers used the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Standard Transplant Analysis and Research file to identify all U.S. organ transplant recipients between 1987 and 2013.  Read more

Allergan acquires rights to potential topical treatment for under eye bags

Allergan plc announced in a press release that it has acquired Topokine Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on developing topical medicines for fat reduction.

Terms of the purchase include an upfront payment from Allergan of $85 million and success-based developments and sales milestones of XAF5, a first-in-class topical agent in late-stage development for treating steatoblepharon, or under eye bags, according to the release. Read more

Platelet-rich plasma shows positive effect on androgenetic alopecia

Patients who received a half-head treatment of platelet-rich plasma to treat androgenetic alopecia showed a clinical benefit at 6-month follow-up, according to recent research.

“This clinical research provides support that the application of [platelet-rich plasma] may have a therapeutic effect on [androgenetic alopecia] and can be used as a safe complementary treatment option,” Rubina Alves, MD, from the department of dermatology at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain and colleagues wrote in their study. Psoriasis patients treated by lasers show no indication of koebnerization

Patients with plaque psoriasis who underwent laser treatment did not show evidence of subsequent koebnerization, according to recent research.

“Koebnerization did not occur on the face, neck, or scalp in patients with plaque psoriasis who underwent laser treatment, irrespective of the severity of their psoriasis and medication they were receiving at the time of their procedure,” Suzanne M. Sachsman, MD, from the division of dermatology at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine, and colleagues wrote.  Read more
