Hyaluronic acid filler increases epidermal layers, collagen fibers

Patients who received hyaluronic acid dermal filler showed increased epidermal layers and collagen fibers at follow-up, according to recent research.
“In this study, the clinical and histological study of [hyaluronic acid] filler injections on photoaged faces revealed clinical improvement and skin remodeling after the procedure, with a long follow-up period,” Fabiana Braga França Wanick, MD, MSc, from the department of medical sciences at Fluminense Federal University in Niterói, Brazil, and colleagues wrote in their study. “Morphometric analyses showed an increase in collagen after 3 and 9 months, and an increase in elastic fibers after 9 months. Moreover, the persistence of the [hyaluronic acid] filler in the dermis after 9 months has been one of the longest periods of that reported to date.”
Wanick and colleagues evaluated 20 patients who received 24 mg/mL of hyaluronic acid filler bilaterally into the nasolabial and preauricular folds in a single session. Before the procedure and at 3-month and 9-month follow-up periods, the researchers performed skin biopsies of the preauricular folds.
They found that patients who underwent the procedure had increased epidermal layers, with 16 of 20 patients completing a clinical study and showing improvement for 12 months. Specifically, Wanick and colleagues noted a 34.2% ± 31.5% increase in collagen fibers at the 3-month follow-up and a 39.5% ± 39.7% increase at the 9-month follow-up.
“After this study, a correlation between sustained clinical improvement and skin remodeling induced by the [hyaluronic acid] filler may be proposed,” Wanick and colleagues wrote. – by Jeff Craven
