Abel Torres, MD, JD, FAAD, begins term as AAD president

Abel Torres, MD, JD, FAAD, began his term as president of the American Academy of Dermatology at the conclusion of the academy's annual meeting earlier this week in Washington, D.C.

Torres, a Cleveland-based dermatologist and lawyer, also will hold the same 1-year position for the American Academy of Dermatology Association, according to a press release from the AAD.

"I am honored to serve the AAD at a time when there are a number of important issues facing our specialty," Torres said in the release. "Strengthening the sense of community among dermatologists and our patients can turn these challenges into opportunities and enhance the quality of patient care."

Torres received his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He completed his fellowship in advanced dermatologic surgery and Mohs surgery at the University of California, San Francisco.

He is a professor and chairman of the department of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University MetroHealth Systems in Cleveland. Torres also is a professor and chairman of the department of dermatology at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California, where he completed his residency in internal medicine, and an associate professor of public health at Loma Linda University.

Torres received his law degree from Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, and is a member of the California Bar, according to the release.

His also is a member of the AAD board of directors, the release reported.
