The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery has presented Ian A. Maher, MD, with its Award for Outstanding Service.

Maher, of St. Louis, is founder of the ASDS Sun Safe Soccer program, which was developed through the society’s Future Leaders Network. The skin cancer prevention program works with coaches to create “a culture of sun protection in soccer,” one of the most-played sports by children aged 4 to 19 years in the United States, according to an ASDS press release.

The program was spearheaded by Maher when he served as a 2010-11 mentee in the Future Leaders network, which pairs future leaders in dermatologic surgery with mentors.

Maher worked with John O’Brien, a member of the U.S. Men’s National Team in the 2002 World Cup, to promote the Sun Safe Soccer program at the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention, according to the release.

Maher was nominated for the award by Naomi Lawrence, MD, ASDS president. The two had mutually participated in the Future Leaders Network, according to the release.

“Ian is bright, enthusiastic and very industrious,” Lawrence stated in the release. “With any project or assignment, he is always conscientious and often innovative. He is clearly dedicated to serving our organization and the dermatologic community as a whole.”

The award was presented at the 2015 ASDS annual meeting in Chicago.

Maher is an assistant professor in the Department of Dermatology at St. Louis University, and is attending physician at the Anheuser-Busch Institute and SLUCare Des Peres. He has specialized in skin cancer, dermatologic surgery, Mohs micrographic surgery, facial reconstruction and cutaneous laser surgery, according to the release.
