Liposuction significantly increases quality of life in lipedema patients

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — After treatment with liposuction, patients with lipedema showed a significant reduction of subcutaneous fatty tissue, which improved body proportions and overall shape, according to a study presented at the 23rd Annual World Congress of Dermatology.

A total of 164 patients who underwent conservative lipedema therapy over several years were treated with liposuction in tumescent local anesthesia with vibrating microcannulas. Read more

Venous thromboembolism unlikely to occur during plastic surgery

Patients undergoing plastic surgery were unlikely to develop venous thromboembolisms intraoperatively, exhibiting a different pathophysiology from that of orthopedic patients undergoing joint replacement, according to recently published study findings.

In the study, researcher Eric Swanson, MD, offered Doppler ultrasound screening to 200 consecutive plastic surgery patients undergoing 205 operations. Read more

FDA advisory committee recommends Radiesse for hand augmentation

The General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel of the FDA’s Medical Devices Advisory Committee voted in February in favor of recommending expanding the indication of Merz’s Radiesse Dermal Filler to include hand augmentation for volume correction.

The advisory committee members voted the treatment safe (11 in favor, three against) and effective (12 in favor, two against). Read more

Xeomin, Botox show similar efficacy for treatment of glabellar lines in multicenter comparison

Merz Aesthetics has announced positive results from a post-market, parallel-group clinical trial comparing Xeomin with Botox for the treatment of glabellar facial lines.

Allergan granted FDA approval for Natrelle Inspira gel-filled implants

Allergan announced that the FDA has given market approval for its Natrelle Inspira round gel-filled, smooth breast implants.

“In the past 2 years, Allergan has received FDA approval for three new and important breast implant options, which represents the latest advancements in Allergan’s growing product portfolio,” Scott Whitcup, MD, Allergan’s executive vice president of research and development and chief scientific officer, said in a company press release.
