Stephen H. Mandy, MD, recently received the Samuel J. Stegman Award for Distinguished Service from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

The award was given to Mandy, a voluntary professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Department of Dermatology ad owner/director of South Beach Dermatology, at the ASDS annual meeting in Chicago. The award “honors individuals who have significantly contributed to ASDS and to the field and dermatologic surgery,” according to a press release.

“I’ve watched it grow from a very small, nuclear group in the very infancy of dermatologic surgery to the society as we know it today,” Mandy, who joined ASDS in its early stages in 1973, stated in the release. “They formed this organization to help validate the specialty and to increase its knowledge and grow the specialty. If feel like I was very much on the ground floor of that.”

Mandy served as ASDS president from 2001 to 2002, and was instrumental in the development of the society’s Industry Advisory Council and Future Leaders Network, according to the release.

Mandy is considered an expert in laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, excisional surgery, injectable fillers and neurotoxins, the release reported.

“Steve Mandy is one of the unsung pioneers of dermatologic procedures,” David M. Duffy, MD, a clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Southern California, who nominated Mandy for the award, stated in the release. “His areas of expertise and of which he has published include dermabrasion, scar revision, laser resurfacing, neurotoxins – in fact the whole panoply of procedures which ASDS has been able to teach and promote throughout the dermatologic community.”
