American Society of Plastic Surgeons President Scot B. Glasberg, MD, responded to an International Business Times article titled “Medical Turf Wars” where the performance of plastic surgery procedures completed by non–board-certified plastic surgeons was investigated.

“We [the ASPS] are interested in protection — of patients, of the reputation of our specialty and of an essential component of our mission — advancing the highest standards of training, ethics and physician practice,” Glasberg wrote in the letter to the editor, which was released by the ASPS.

By encouraging consumers to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon, “ASPS believes we are not only guarding the specialty of plastic surgery from the indelible mark of illegally performed, often fatal procedures by nonphysicians, but also protecting patients and assuring they make choices that assure the safest, highest quality of care,” Glasberg continued.

He also mentioned the ASPS Do Your Homework public service announcement.

Through this campaign, consumers can learn that board-certified plastic surgeons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the specialty board which is overseen by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
