Five recent developments in cosmetic dermatology
Recent cosmetic developments reported on Healio.com/Dermatology included study results showing a high response rate to Juvéderm Voluma XC as treatment in midface at 6 months.

1. Response to Juvéderm Voluma XC high in midface at 6 months, increased with injection volume
Juvéderm Voluma XC injected into three facial subregions resulted in high responder rates at 6 months, according to recently published study results.
Researchers studied 235 patients (median age, 56 years; 80.4% women) with midface volume deficit who received Juvéderm Voluma XC (VYC-20L; hyaluronic acid gel containing lidocaine, Allergan) in at least one of three facial subregions, zygomaticomalar, anteromedial cheek and submalar. Read more
2. Microfocused ultrasound with visualization in Fitzpatrick Skin III - VI offers results, minimal adverse events
Microfocused ultrasound lifts and tightens facial and neck skin with no additional adverse events in patients with Fitzpatrick skin types III to VI, according to JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.
In the study, 52 patients with Fitzpatrick skin III to VI were treated with microfocused ultrasound according to the physical characteristics of each participant. Read more
3. Patients prefer linear closure vs. purse string closure
More than half of patients surveyed preferred linear closure to purse string closure in dermatologic surgery, according to recently published study results.
A 13-question survey included a simulator device of a 3-D skin model, as well as photographs of scars resulting from purse string and linear closure scars at least 6 months after healing. Read more
4. Running sutures may be preferred closure technique in facial scar repair
In Mohs micrographic surgery scars, interrupted and continuous 5-0 nylon sutures had equivalent cosmetic results.
A total of 101 patients were randomized to have half their scar sutured with interrupted 5-0 nylon stitches and the other half with running 5-0 nylon stitches. Read more
5. ASDS: Excess weight, skin texture top cosmetic concerns
Excess weight, skin texture, and lines and wrinkles around the eyes were top consumer cosmetic concerns, according to recent survey results from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.
