The research and education arm of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation established The Mollenkopf Breast Reconstruction Assistance Fund to provide financial assistance to women seeking noninsurance reimbursable aesthetic surgery for their post-breast cancer reconstructions, according to a press release.

Susan Mollenkopf, a breast cancer survivor and her husband, Steve, donated $200,000 to create the fund.

The fund is open to board-certified plastic surgeons who are ASAPS members and patients in the greater San Diego County area.

The grants will be made on behalf of patients for up to $5,000.

ASAPS hopes the fund will expand nationwide. Patients in other regions are encouraged to make donations so patients in other areas can receive similar assistance.

“The importance of returning to normalcy, of feeling whole again, is critical to the recovery process,” Susan Mollenkopf, told ASAPS. “Breast cancer challenges each of us in so many ways. We have decided to try and ease the financial challenges some of these patients face.”
