More than half of patients surveyed preferred linear closure to purse string closure in dermatologic surgery, according to recently published study results.
Researchers conducted a survey of 176 patients (58% men) from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center dermatology clinic to determine a preference for linear or purse string closure. The 13-question survey included a simulator device of a 3-D skin model, as well as photographs of scars resulting from purse string and linear closure scars at least 6 months after healing.
Descriptive statistics and chi-square test of association were used to analyze data outcomes.
Almost 55% of participants preferred linear closure, with preference independent of gender. While 88 participants had previous linear or purse strong closures, the preferred method was independent of their experience. Cosmetic outcome was very important to 50% of participants.
There were 86.2% of respondents who found patient photographs the most influential factor in determining preference, while 88% of participants reported that simulator devices would be useful to understand the procedures.
“Patients often inquire about the final outcome of their procedures,” the researchers concluded. “The methods in this survey may represent a venue for educating patients and incorporating their preferences into the choices they will make regarding dermatologic procedures, which they will undergo.” – by Bruce Thiel
