The American Society of Plastic Surgeons presented an update on the “mommy makeover” in the August issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The procedure for postpartum women combines abdominoplasty with mastopexy to improve the areas affected by pregnancy, according to the press release.

ASPS members Alan Matarasso, MD, and Darren Smith, MD, believe the increase in this makeover stem from an increase in pregnancies at later ages and increased multiple births, among modern women who have an interest in fitness, nutrition and maintaining youthful looks.

Matarasso and Smith recommend surgeons keep the total surgical time under 4 hours, to minimize risk. Surgeons should also address patient concerns about “drains, pain and scars” after abdominoplasty.

Finally, the ASPS addressed the demand for body contouring procedures by men in the same age group, who typically wish to treat the chest and abdomen area, including the “love handles” across the midsection.
