Excess weight, skin texture, and lines and wrinkles around the eyes were top consumer cosmetic concerns, according to recent survey results from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

In the 2015 Consumer Survey of Cosmetic Dermatology, 88% of respondents who would consider a cosmetic procedure reported being “somewhat or extremely bothered” by excess weight, 72% were bothered by skin texture and/or discoloration, and 69% were bothered by lines and wrinkles around and under the eyes, according to a press release. There were 7,315 people who participated to the blinded online survey, with 3,596 respondents indicating they would consider a cosmetic procedure.

American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) members performed more than 207,000 body sculpting procedures in 2014, with cryolipolysis the most commonly performed procedure, according to a separate ASDS survey on procedures.

One of the most frequently performed procedures is wrinkle-relaxing injections to counteract lines around the eyes, forehead and mouth, according to the release.

“Wrinkle-relaxers are a proven and effective way for patients to attain a more youthful look,” Naomi Lawrence, MD, ASDS president-elect, said in the release.

The survey also found that 67% of respondents considering a cosmetic procedure were bothered by excess submental fat, the release reported. The FDA approved Kybella (deoxycholic acid, Kythera) in April to treat submental fat in adults.

“This unprecedented, first-in-class treatment is an absolute game-changer for many people bothered by stubborn chin fat,” Lawrence said in the release. “Kybella will provide dermatologists with an exciting, new treatment that can effectively address a common frustration with consumers.”
