Microsurgical breast reconstruction results in higher patient satisfaction in thin patients

For patients undergoing breast reconstruction with a BMI less than 22 kg/m², microsurgical breast reconstruction results in higher patient satisfaction, according to researchers.

The study included 273 patients with a BMI less than 22 kg/m², who were undergoing breast reconstruction: 81.7% underwent tissue expander/implant reconstruction and 18.3% underwent microsurgical reconstruction.

Twenty-five patients (50%) who underwent microsurgical reconstruction responded to a BREAST-Q survey, and 108 patients (48.4%) who underwent implant reconstruction responded.

Microsurgical patients required more secondary revision and autologous fat grafting with a higher volume of fat per injection.

Microsurgical patients were more satisfied with their breasts (73.8% vs. 63.7%) as determined by BREAST-Q responses, while overall satisfaction rates with reconstruction were similar.

Microsurgical patients also benefited from higher psychological well-being at 82.3% vs. 74.2%. – by Abigail Sutton
