The rate of systemic comorbidities for patients with rosacea was associated with rosacea severity, according to recent study results.

Barbara M. Rainer, MD, and colleagues Rainer and colleagues evaluated 130 participants in the case-control study: 65 with rosacea and 65 without. They analyzed the correlation between systemic comorbidities and severity of rosacea in patients when compared to controls

They found that rosacea was significantly associated with respiratory diseases, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other gastrointestinal diseases, metabolic and urogenital diseases, food and airborne allergies and female hormone imbalance. Moderate-to-severe rosacea was associated with metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), GERD, hyperlipidemia and hypertension when compared to mild rosacea.

“Our study provides evidence supporting the link between rosacea and systemic comorbidities,” Rainer and colleagues wrote. “Moderate-to-severe rosacea is associated with hyperlipidemia, hypertension, metabolic diseases, CVD and GERD. Physicians should be aware of these associations to provide comprehensive care to patients with rosacea, especially to those presenting with more severe disease.”
